Convert Your Van Ltd - Layout Guide

Below is a brief guide to choosing / designing your camper van/motorhome layout, there are example layouts as well as hints and tips on how to decide what you want if there isn't a layout listed here that is right for you. There are example layouts for larger camper vans / motorhomes / race vans as well as some alternatives to the standard side layout and rock and roll bed for smaller vans such as the VW T4 and T5 and SWB Transits, etc.

When deciding on a layout it is good practice to look at what has been done before, go to motorhome shows or large dealers where you can have a browse round. Bare in mind that what might look great in a photo (or layout diagram), might not be ideal in practice, so to go and have a look inside and a walk round existing motorhomes can give you a better idea of what you can expect to fit in a given sized van.

The next thing to consider is that when it comes to a camper van interior, everything is always a compromise, the ideal would be a coach sized motorhome to fit everything in that you want, but that would fit in a car parking space at the local supermarket, and that obviously isn't possible! So it comes down to compromise. Decide what you need in your camper, what you'd like in your camper, and what you could do without. For example, how many 2nd hand motorhomes do you see where the shower has never been used? Do you need one? Some people will, some people won't.

If you already have your van, once you have a layout in mind it is a good idea to try it in the van, this can be done by drawing it on the floor or marking it with tape, you can then get an idea of what space will be left, what gaps you'll have to walk through, etc. And don't forget the wheel arches! The can often get in the way of fridges, toilets, etc, so try to bare them in mind when planning your layout.

Below you will find some example layouts with approximate prices for furniture and cushions (prices are a guide and can vary either way depending on van model and finer details). Please note, these are just some of the layouts that are possible, and it would be almost impossible to show every type of layout that you could have as the possibilities are almost endless. The diagrams are intended as a guide, you could possibly combine your favourite parts of more than one layout to come up with something that is right for you. If there is nothing that seems ideal, you can always email us with your own unique layout and we can give you a quote based on that, all we need is a detailed description or better still a diagram and we can give you an accurate quote.

The layouts are listed (roughly) in size order, starting with smaller vans such as the VW T4, Caravelle, T5, SWB Transit, Vivaro, etc, working through MWB and LWB vans such as the Citroen Relay, Fiat Ducato, Renault Master, Vauxhall Movano, etc and finishing with extra LWB vans like the Mercedes Sprinter, Volkswagen LT35/Crafter and Iveco Daily (which are often used for race van conversions). For each layout there is a daytime and a night time mode shown.

Smaller Vans (SWB)

The layout shown below is the most common in the smaller low roof van conversion and is often seen in VW T4s and T5s, Mazda Bongos, etc. It is our standard side conversion with wardrobe and kitchen unit running down the side of the van with a rock and roll (pull out bed) bed at the rear. Small variations are available with this layout, eg mounting the bed further forward to give a boot area or adding a buddy seat / rear facing seat behind the front seats.

This next layout is a little different for a SWB van and shows an L-shape seating area with a small rear wardrobe and a kitchen unit running down the opposite side of the van.

The following layout is similar to the one above but is more suited to a vehicle with single front seats allowing a walkthrough access to the rear of the vehicle.

Below is an alternative layout sometimes seen in VWs which allows a full width bed.

Larger vans / Motorhomes (MWB and LWB)

The layout below shows a 4 berth option, ideal for the Fiat Ducato/Citroen Relay/Peugeot Boxer as these vans are 6 feet wide so allow a 6 foot bed across the van rather than having to go the length of the van. Variations to the layout could include single front seats to allow a walkthrough from the cab area and a fixed raised bed at the rear to give a large garage area.
